The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been struggling to keep their players on the field, started Troy Polamalu today. However, their Pro-Bowl safety was not able to make it through the whole game. He had to leave in the first quarter.
According to Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com, Polamalu re-aggravated a calf injury he suffered leading up to the Steelers' Week 1 match-up. In today's game, Polamalu injured the calf on a non-contact play. He had missed the previous two games for Pittsburgh because of the injury.
Polamalu has had a long injury history, but he has also been incredibly productive while on the field for the Steelers. He suffered a similar calf injury last season during the playoffs. He has started all of the Steelers games in just two of the past seven seasons.
Polamalu has been a huge boost to Pittsburgh's defense while he's on the field. In his career, he has 29 interceptions. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, Polamalu only had two last season and hasn't had any yet this year.
The Steelers' defense has been on the decline the last couple seasons and injuries have been the main culprit. If Polamalu misses any more significant time, it will certainly be a big blow to Pittsburgh going forward.
