San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith took another step
toward being ready to suit up Monday when his team takes on the Chicago Bears.
Smith was cleared for non-contact drills and was able to return to practice
Wednesday, reports Kareem Copeland of NFL.com.

"Contact is kind of like the final straw," Smith said, via The Bee. "But I was able to go out there today, which was a little redundant seeing as how we don't get hit in practice. Yeah, felt good out there."
Smith was one of several quarterbacks, including Jay Cutler
of the Bears, to sustain concussions last weekend. While Cutler is doubtful to
play in Monday night’s showdown between two NFC powerhouses, it appears that
Smith could be on his way to returning.
