San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Alex Smith
sustained a concussion and had to exit yesterday’s tie against the St. Louis
Rams. Smith was replaced by backup Colin Kaepernick, who could replace the
starter next week against the Chicago Bears.

Smith took a hard hit by linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar after
making a four-yard run in the first quarter of the game. He remained in the game
and went on to throw a touchdown pass, but he eventually left for the locker
room after the scoring drive.
It was later reported that Smith was diagnosed with a
concussion. Kaepernick has been used this season when the team’s run the
Wildcat formation, but starting every down is obviously a different animal.
Smith has been oft criticized over the years, but he’s been a solid quarterback
for San Francisco over the past two seasons.
