In an expected move, the San Francisco 49ers have cut
veteran kicker David Akers, the team has announced.

“The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best.”
By releasing Akers, the 49ers save $3 million against the
salary cap. Beyond his financial commitment, the veteran was erratic last season,
missing 13 of his 42 field goal attempts. He played through a painful injury
and the team considered replacing him prior to the start of the playoffs.
However, Akers continued as the 49ers kicker throughout
their Super Bowl run. If he’s able to return from his injury, he should get
another shot elsewhere. He was a record-setting kicker not even two seasons
ago.
