With the deadline fast approaching on March 4th, 4pmEST for teams to declare their franchise tags. News comes out of Houston that they are unlikely to franchise Safety Glover Quin who is generating 'persistent buzz' on the free agency market according to profootballtalk.com
This was further endorsed by John McClain of Houston Chronicle, who wrote:
Whilst this is an unusual occurence where both the player and the organisation would like to maintain the status quo, the salary cap issue married with the lucrative offers on the free agency market make it harder to ignore.
Losing Quin would allow the cap space to go to other players such as Connor Barwin, James Casey and Brice McCain. Further extending current contracts of stud defensive end Antonio Smith and linebacker Brian Cushing, would free up even more cap space.
The Texans have needs at wide receiver, inside linebacker, O-line and with the inevitable departure of Quin they can add free safety to the shopping list this off-season.

The reason the Texans aren’t using the franchise tag on a player like Quin is because he would get $6.9 million this year, which would use almost all of their current cap.
